The International College of Chinese Studies (ICCS) of East China Normal University (ECNU) is one of the national bases for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL) as well as Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) in South China. It is also a teaching base for overseas Chinese set up by Overseas Chinese Office of the State Council and one of the test centers of the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) authorized by Hanban.

 

It comprises four teaching and research institutes: Department of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Chinese Language Department, Teaching Center of Chinese language and Culture, and Center of Distance Chinese Language Teaching. There are another two affiliated research bodies: the Research Institute of Applied Linguistics and the Intangible Cultural Heritage Research and Protection Center (previously known as the Research Institute of Chinese Folk Customs Protection and Development). ICCS offers five doctoral programs, respectively in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages, Chinese philology, Theory of Literature and Art, and Folklore in Literature. There are seven master programs in the related studies available in the college, too. The college’s education quality, management features and research capacity have been enjoying worldwide recognition and reputation in the field of interest.

 

As one of the National Featured Specialties, the TCFL program available in the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language is mainly constructed by the National Ministry of Education and its graduates (including a considerable number of foreign graduates with master and PhD degrees) have successfully stepped into work both at home and abroad, developing themselves to be core teaching professionals in TCFL, TCSOL, Chinese Language & Culture Promotion Worldwide, and also working as bridges in Sino-Foreign Cultural Communication.

 

The Chinese Language Department is committed to the undergraduate program of Chinese Language provided to foreign students, with three concentrations respectively on Chinese Language, Business Chinese, and International Business (bilingual: Chinese & English). It admits overseas Chinese and foreign students holding diplomas from senior high schools or above and with their native language not to be Chinese.

 

The Teaching Center of Chinese Language and Culture is devoted to the long-term and short-term non-degree education/training for foreign students. And up to the present, tens of thousands of foreign students from over one hundred countries have accomplished their studies successfully.

 

ICCS has also been carrying on training programs for Chinese language teachers and principals from overseas Chinese language schools. So far, more than several thousands of them have received professional trainings over the past years.

 

The website of hanyuwang / Chinese Online (www.hanyu.com.cn), maintained by the Center of Distance Chinese Language Teaching, has established its position of prestige both at home and abroad.

 

Having established and maintained cooperative relations with many renowned universities and governments in the world, ICCS has been engaged in diversified teaching and research activities and joint researches with them.

 

Every year, its teaching faculties attend many academic conferences to deliver their latest research papers both at home and abroad. They publish their academic books, apply and conclude nationally or provincially funded research projects. ICCS has published a series of excellent self-compiled textbooks on language study which enjoy great popularity among students.

 

In the past ten years since its founding, the International College of Chinese Studies has consistently cherished its tradition and boldly initiated lots of fruitful reforms. Along with its process of further internationalization, ICCS is aiming to build itself into an academic institute renowned for high-quality education, high-level research and broad service for society.
